Hello!
please repost this to any fire performers you know, There are some important
issues facing the fire community, and we need to get the word out quick, and
there is an important Town Hall meeting wednesday.

In addition, there is a new discussion list for fire performers to discuss tips,
community interests, events, and more at:

http://www.curiousjosh.com/lafire

please sign up, more information about the list is below.

----
*Subject*: Town Hall Meeting: A Call to Arms for all Los Angeles Based Fire
Artists

*Where*: Smash Labs, 1714 Albion St, Los Angeles, CA 90031 323-227-6274

*When*: Doors open at 7pm Meeting begins at 8pm

*Who*: All members of the Los Angeles Based Fire Arts Community

*Why*: During recent interactions with Los Angeles County and State _Fire
Marshalls <http://www.film.ca.gov/LocationResources/FilmSafety.html>_we have
learned that they are in the process of designing a set of safety standards
and guidelines in an effort to standardize safety requirements within our
industry. These safety guidelines are to be implemented in the first
quarter of 2008.

We have the great fortune that our local county Fire Marshalls have
offered to allow us participate in the design of these standards.
Organizations such as the Safety Advisory for Fire and FX in Entertainment
(SAFFE)and members of the Pyrotechnics community have offered to provide
guidance or advice in the different methods of organizing ourselves and
interfacing with regulatory and enforcement entities such as the Fire
Department.

This *_Wednesday, December 12, 2007_* a Town Hall Meeting has been called to
inform the community and discuss the formation an organization comprised of
members representing the interests of the Los Angeles fire community.

******It is time for us all to come together, as a community - to openly
create our own guidelines that address issues, such as safety, performance
standards, etc. It is of the utmost importance that we collectively decide
this before it is decided for us*****

In Addition, there is a new e-mail discussion list for
fire artists and people who are interested in fire performance in the Los
Angeles area. This list can be joined by following this link:

http://www.curiousjosh.com/lafire

This list is an opportunity for us to stay in touch as a community, and
discuss a number of pressing issues that are affecting the Los Angeles fire
community such as the upcoming implementation of safety regulations,
standards, and restrictions governing our industry.

The LA Fire mailing list will be a great place to:
discuss issues affecting the fire community
share fire related tips and techniques
communicate about fire events in the LA area
and more

Please spread the word by continuing to forward this to fire performers who
are in Los Angeles, or who visit Los Angeles and perform with fire. If we
fail in this initiative then viewpoints such as "Poi is the most dangerous
tool in your arsenal" or the potential banning of poi spinning in the
direction of the audience may become a reality.

Troupes & Tool Manufacturers that have involvement in this initiative have
included: CuriousJosh, Fire Drums, Fire Groove, Los Angeles Fire Effects (LAFX),
Machina
Candeo, Mutaytor, Phoenix Projekt, Pyrophernalia / Om Fire, Sirena
Serpentina, Trick Concepts, & Volcano Flux.

*_Directions:
_*
SmashLabs
1714 Albion Street (entrance is here - big red door with cut metal numbers -
push down on the lever to enter)
The "back" door is a big roll door in the last parking lot on the North side
of Main just before the train tracks - look for the La Mano Press sign. If
it's full, there is an empty lot directly across the street on the South
side of Main Street, or feel free to park on Main or Albion and come in the
front. *main thing to remember is if you've gone over the tracks, you've
passed Albion which is a TINY street and easy to miss.

*GoogleMaps:
http://maps.google.com/maps?q=1714+Albion+St,+Los+Angeles,+CA+90031,+USA&ie=UTF8&z=16&iwloc=addr&om=1

*
1714 Albion St,
Los Angeles, CA 90031 - it's the triangular space that starts on Main and
back up on Albion
323-22S-MASH (323-227-6274) is the office phone which I'll have on me in
case anyone gets lost.

*
"There are risks and costs to a program of action. But they are far less
than the long-range risks and costs of comfortable inaction."

I used to live in Ventura and am now in L.A. I'm looking for a ride with some groovy people who will be leaving on Thursday, 8/30 from Ventura then leaving from the playa on Sunday, 9/2, returning to Ventura by sometime Monday, 9/3. I'll make my own way to and from Ventura from the L.A. area, where I live. God, I miss Ventura! I also recently sold my $200 ticket because I changed my mind about going but guess what? I've changed it back again. You know how that goes. So I'm also looking for a ticket, pref. for $200.

If anyone has a ticket and/or needs a rider who is also a responsible, licensed driver who has driven an RV but can only squeeeze in a quickie weekend burn this year, I'm your gal! This will be my seventh burn, if I make it, so I'm a pro at this but always open to learning/experiencing something new.
Meditation with Matthew Smith
Meditation is a discipline that calms the mind and awakens the heart.
Different cultures throughout history have developed a myriad of forms and
techniques. This workshop will create a space where all practitioners
will be welcome to come and sit together in the beauty and silence of
nature. This is also a great opportunity for those who are curious about
meditation but have never had the chance to experience this simple and
transformative practice firsthand. Brief instruction will be given at the
beginning and after we sit, there will be an open discussion on
incorporating a meditation practice into daily life.

Matthew Smith has been studying and practicing meditation for more than a
decade and has received teachings from the Dalai Lama, Thich Nhat Hanh,
Pir Vilayat Inayat Khan, Ram Dass, Roshi Bernie Glassman and Roshi Seisen
Saunders.

"We are what we think. All that we are arises with our thoughts. With
our thoughts we create the world." the Buddha

Clay Moulding with Christian the Blacksmith
An interactive workshop where teamwork creates the art. You can make your
own project 24/7 at the independent table or work with a team during
workshop hours to build a large scale coil sculpture entitled, "Everybody
Poos"

Poetic Synergetics with Audette Sophia
This Playshop explores poetry's transcendence of individual
self-expression and leads us into the fertile territory of collaborative
collective storytelling. It provides a safe and playful environment to
experiment with the power and possibilities of synergy...with a poetic
flavor. Playfully accessible for beginners and advanced wordsmiths. Come
add your voice to the weave and leave full to bursting with inspiration...

Audette Sophia is a poetess, performer, and creative catalyst. She has a
B.A. in Integrative arts and an extensive background in multi-disciplinary
performance. Her mission is to catalyze creative personal empowerment and
cultural evolution through the arts. She likes to combine performances
with interactivations and offers a buffet of juicy poetics wordshops and
unique hybrid events. Summer 07' she is busting out with a Poetessence
book & cd.

Tai Chi with Pod
Bring in the morning with a breath of fresh air, and let's cultivate our
Chi energy by moving like the ocean in a most fluid way. Tai Chi Chuan is
a relaxing, slow moving meditation mixed with QiGong that has been
practiced by Shaolin Monks in the Songshan Mountains for over a thousand
years. We will have a nice blend of stretching, Yang Style Tai Chi Chu'an
and QiGong. A guarantee to recharge, revitalize, replenish, and catapult
us into a beautiful new day.

Contact Improvisation with Avo Soltes
Contact improvisation is the extemporaneous interaction between one or
more people which can include contact in both the physical and emotional
sense. it explores the connection of the mind and soul to the body, as
well as its relationship to others and the surrounding space. Awareness of
one’s self and others in the space, the sharing of weight (both giving and
accepting), counterbalance, and imagination are among the many varied
elements.

Awaken the Goddess with Ardas
Think back to a time before you can remember, when Wild Women joined in
communion to sing, dance, stretch, breathe and be. Let your true Goddess
shine as you are led through a series of dance and yoga based exercises to
spin the Chakras and raise the kundalini. Home Made Raw Organic Chocolate
Love served during class

Monkey Chant with Gamelan X
Gamelan X works with the vocal interlocking rhythms and physicality of
Balinese Monkey Chant, or Kecak (pronounced KETjak). This guided chant
experience is about building Community energy and unity through the
interweaving of our voices. You will experience a noticeable increase of
physical energy, an elevated sense of joy, and most likely, you'll laugh a
great deal while sharing this time with new and renewed friends. Go
deeper into holding your own voice strongly while being conscious of the
voices of others in community.

Living our light, allowing our shadow with Jesse Lombardi
Once there is light there is shadow. Shadow defines light. We are all
aspiring to live a Spiritual life. By mere karma, our human life expresses
itself through the shadow. Many times we judge our shadow, and reprimand
ourselves for the need to work out this wounded shadow essence. This
workshop will clarify the truth, that they are one and the same. The
spirit can only experience it's human incarnation through the essence of
light and dark via the shadow. The workshop is a fusion of yoga, breath,
meditation, and dance movement, laced with creative empowerment teachings.

Transformation Station with Stardust and Angelique
The Spiral Project has teamed up with the performance troupe, Lucent
Dossier, to create "The Cuddle The World Tour," which focuses on sharing
performance and art via interactive workshops with youth around the globe.

Fire spinning immediately stuck me as very intriguing and visually interesting -- especially since my next photo is to be lit using alternative light sources. I’m interested in shooting a portrait of a person, or group spinning. If you're around this evening, and are spinning, get in touch with me. The entire shoot would probably only take half an hour, and you'd leave with some nice images to use for yourself. Please feel free to contact me if there are any questions.

It will be done in both color and black&white 4x5 format (large negatives). We will probably shoot about 10 frames with 2 exposures for each frame, so have a bit of patience and be able to take direction. This is an experiment for me, but we’ll have fun and hope for a good end product. Sign a model release and I’ll give you prints of the best and the rights to use them.

I don’t have a location in mind so hopefully you have an idea where fire is allowed. I’m in Santa Barbara--can travel a bit. This weekend is ideal but not mandatary. If you interested please let me know as soon as possible.

how bout [since i generally got plans on full moon nights already and we don't need moonlight when we got our own damn fire]

we decide on a particular super secret undisclosed location to gather and play with fire? [on the night of a new moon]

EVERYBODY has been yappin about wanting to get together and play

NOBODY seems to have a sufficient private location. especially since there are suddenly eleventy-seven fire freaks in this town.

there ARE locations that could probably work

so lets do this.

OBVIOUSLY we would not want to discuss any severely pertinent details out here in public. so write me a note and if there is enough interest and some semblance of concensus i will send out info to those i know.

if i don't know you then find someone that can vouch for you.

then i will have to trust that they will use their wisdom to tell the people that they KNOW. and it could be good.

NOT trying to be difficult. just use a little common sense here peeps.

or people could be stoopid and we can just keep on keepin on just biiitchin and moaning about how there's nowhere for us all to meet up and spin.

so send me your email address and suggestions on location and i will respond if there are enough nibbles to make this happen.

A fire arts and hand drummers gathering.
This is not a 'festival' nor is it a BurningMan sponsored event.
This is just a casual fun weekend where we can meet new and reunite with old friends of the fire arts and drumming community.
For those who haven't yet experienced RW&B, it's a beautiful secluded beach with camping amenities near Santa Cruz that is fire friendly.

Although we'll certainly be dancing and playing with our friends, please be aware that this is NOT A RAVE or dance party.
We hope to have a DJ 'part' of the time but RW&B is under new management & we're still feelin things out.

Please DO NOT FORWARD this to lists out side 'our' community.
Please DO forward this to our fire friends and drummers and we'll see you mid April for a very special weekend.

Please join the FireDrums tribe http://firedrums.tribe.net/ and post questions, suggestions, ride share info and anything else there.
hi all. A number of factors have led me to question if there should be a gathering this month (friday, march 4th) or if it should be postponed again til april.
factors:
Lack of interest from other spinners
I have a sprained ankle
Cold wet weather
Location (beach) may be washed out and unusable

The gathering would be downtown Ventura on the beach by the pier, moonlight, stars, fire dancers, audience. Free and fun. Anyone interested or definately not interested post to this thread, I'll tally up the votes on thursday and decide whether it's worth the time or if it will be postponed to start again in April. Thanks for the help.

I travel alot and spin whenever/wherever I can. as of this moment I am planning an open ended fire tour into central/south america in an old school bus with 3 other fire junkies. One of my own projects is organizing a database of the u.s. and north/central/south america which will allow an individual to research the laws and requirements of each region, and provide contact information for other artists, officials, events, organizations, supplies, etc...

Any suggestions to make it more benificial to the community is appreciated.
Any information you would like to contribute would also be appreciated.

I would like to eventually teach classes on the art, sciences, history and spirituality of fire dancing as I believe they all play a large part in the connection between the human conscience/subconscience and the use of fire as a form of individual expression/reflection.
